Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairmen, sent a memo on February 14, 2007 addressing this problem to the president and chief executive officer of Starbucks, Jim Donald. In the memo, Schultz voiced his opinion on how the rapid expansion of Starbucks is causing him to revaluate the companys values betwixt how it operated when it began and where it is heading in the future. Starbucks isnt the same neighborhood store as it was when it was established and no long-dated shows the passion for coffee that they had in the beginning. I have said for 20 years that our success is non an entitlement and now its proving to be a reality. Lets be smarter about how we ar spending our time, money and resources. Lets get buttocks to the core (Schultz). Along with its expansion, Starbucks has bee n trying to utilize new technologies to improve the product they sell to consumers.Starbucks changed their espresso machines from manual to spontaneous to accelerate up service and efficiency. These machines blocked the visual sight line the customer previously had to condition the drink being made, and for the intimate experience with the barista (Schultz). People no longer have that intimate federation with the people making their coffee, or to the finished product. The employees are also more disassociated from their work because of these new machines that speed up production.Starbucks also incorporated flavor-locked packaging to supply the demand for fresh roasted coffee. This is a spectacular service to the customer because it keeps coffee grounds or beans fresher longer, yet the effectiveness of the flavor-locked bags contributed to the loss of aroma, possibly the most powerful non-verbal signal, in Starbucks (Schultz). The romance of Starbucks is lost with these improve ments and the unforgettable scent is lessened on with its heritage.Starbucks is still a coffee-loving company, and consumers are still receiving the coffee delicacies they want, but at what cost to tradition. https//sites. google. com/site/hollymadalyn/ written material/Starbucks-Research-paper SYNOPSIS Starbucks Corporation, originally founded in 1971, but purchased by Howard Schultz in 1987, is the foodstuff leader in interchange gourmet coffee (Starbucks, 2008). Canadian Briefing Note (LCBO) Essay Example for Free

Canadian Briefing Note (LCBO) Essay1. IntroductionThe hard liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is a Cr cause Corporation established in 1927. It operates nearly 600 stores across the province and has a monopoly on the change of spirits in Ontario.1 LCBO generated nearly $2.9 billion yearlyly for the people of Ontario including $2 billion in taxes and nearly other $900 million in profits each year, making it the second largest administration liquor distributor in the world.2The source Tories planed to sell the boards revenue stream while retaining actual ownership. Now, Dalton McGuintys Liberals was handing out a workbook to focus groups it had convened, verbalism that the 600 stores could be sold as franchises. Theres something about the prospect of a $5.6-billion deficit that has encouraged the government to generate funds from selling its prime asset. However, the Ontario Liquor Board Employees Union has been running a successful endure against privatizing the LCBO , and at same time, National Union of Public and General Employees threw its full support behind a campaign to stop government of from privatizing the phenomenally-profitable Liquor Control Board of Ontario.Should LCBO be privatized now? In this report, primary of all, the importance of the issue is discussed, then a detailed analysis of the interests among government, business and ordinary is presented, finally I will draw the conclusion and make a few of recommendations for privatization of LCBO.2. Importance of the Issue2.1. RevenueThe LCBO is a highly profitable business owned by the government of Ontario. It is also a significant instalment of the economy of the province. It generates $2.9 billion a year in taxes and profits. The LCBO also contributes to the economy of Ontario in salaries, rents, and the purchase of various goods and goods. This sum of money has a multiplier effect on the provincial economy, larger than the original sum total injected into the economy. 32 .2. Pricing and MarketingThe LCBO carries a very wide selection of quality-tested produces throughout the province at uniform prices. The liquor statement boards can, as single debaseers, bargain for lower prices and greater special discounts from suppliers and carriers. The privately-owned outlets ar fragmented and multiply rapidly and are consequently not centralized in their operations and dispersion network. Privately-owned retail outlets also require higher rates of return on their capital costs than control boards, and these higher costs, among others, antedate to higher alcohol prices under privatization.2.3. EmploymentThe LCBO is a progressive employer of a pull and customer oriented workforce who are classified as permanent (amount 3362) and casual, and full-time and part-time.4 LCBO privatization means the put off of LCBO employees that will lead to huge losses to the treasury and economy of Ontario. Thus the union struggles to uprise campaign against the privati zation.2.4. Society InfluencePrivatizing the LCBO would likely lead to change magnitude access to alcohol, increased consumption and therefore more alcohol-related costs. The significant potential consequences of the privatization of alcohol monopolies include increased overall population consumption increased sales to under-aged and inebriated patrons increased problems with monitoring and enforcement.3. Analysis of Privatization3.1. GovernmentFrom the aspect of government, it is a current leaning that government should not put more intervention in business. Tory said in throne terminology The government will sell businesses it should not operate and assets it should not own. 5 Thus it is tenablenessable that the causation and current minister planned to sell off or partly sell the LCBO. Another reason for privatization may attribute to fiscal deficit, because ministers want to cut its deficit during their terms. The sale of LCBO will obviously descend its financial problem i n short term. However, if we consider it as a financial ending in the long term, it may not be a good choice. Because LCBO is running very well now, it brings an annual dividend of $975 million to government or people of Ontario in 2002-03.63.2. billetMany private investors would prefer to buy the franchise of LCBO or directly buy its retail shop. Because LCBO has already established its stable customer base, and keep back its brand recognizing advantage, it will be a little easy to develop their business in such(prenominal) situation. But due to limit of small scale, its operating cost would be higher than the LCBO, this may lead to high sale price of liquor. And at same reason, it may not control the quality of product as LCBO does.Until now, too many small towns didnt get LCBO service because they couldnt support the overhead of a full-sized LCBO store. Sterling, the former minister of consumer and business services, told reporters. With our go-ahead to offer franchises to exi sting retailers in very small markets, well mend service for residents and visitors, while preserving the LCBOs social responsibility standards. 53.3. PublicMost people are slaked the LCBOs product and service, and support the board control. Alcohol is special commodity, thus government intervention is needed at this situation, even though LCBO has monopoly status in Ontario area. All LCBO retail employees are trained to Challenge and spurn service to anyone who appears underage and cannot provide valid ID or appears intoxicated. Last year, LCBO frontline staff challenged 1.2 million would-be customers and refused service to nearly 70,000, about two-thirds of whom appeared underage and could not provide valid ID.7 It is difficult to imagine what will pop off if all these retail shops are sold to private investors, they may consider more on their own economic benefit and neglect social liability. Increased alcohol problems such as sale to under-aged and intoxicated patron are very likely happen.4. Recommendation and ConclusionThe privatization of LCBO is a complicated issue, because we should consider the relationship and interests among government, business, and public. On one hand, normally government should not act as a policy decision maker and business operator at same time, which will easily lead to monopoly and against good faith.8 On another hand, we have to consider that alcohol is special commodity, which should be effectively controlled by government found on public interest. Therefore my suggestion is to partly privatize LCBO, it will decrease business monopoly in the market, but government could still occupy large part of share, so it can effectively define the operation of business. There are many methods of privatization, and some ideas had been mentioned by government in LCBO history, such as franchise store in rural area, merge with Beer Store, and income trust. The main concern is to find an appropriate appearance to balance the interests of all parties, and make the privatization go smoothly during a period, not suddenly hit some partys interests, and ill-timed be accepted by all groups. In order to achieve this goal, the LCBO and ministry must be more transparent in their decision-making, and more open to consideration of public health interests. From this point of view, government could organize a board which has enough members from different stakeholders, such as employees of LCBO, representative of Ontario citizen, expert of public health and safety, economists, private investor and government officer. They could regularly meet together to discuss the possible method of privatization and heap up all kinds of opinion and feedback from society. Although this method may spend more time during policy-decision process, only when the issue is soundly discussed and known by public, the rational policy could be made to reflect all partys interest and untimely encounter less resistance while it is applied.Endnotes1. As for her relationsh ip with Xavier, they still love apiece other(a) as much as they ever had. Rose was able to forgive the people who infract her, in order to hold on to her dream.4. I think the book is about 8. I was wasted into this book and its story since the first few pages. This is the first book that I really took home to read. The story is very excited and can pick up the speed at some parts. However, the fact that Rose fell in love with Bren too fast rather looking for her parents or Xavier made the story become just another fairytale with a modern twist. Besides that, I really kindred this book5. A. How old was Rose supposed to be if she wasnt stassed? * Rose was technically a blow years old. Before the last 62 years in stasis, she was stassed many times. It actually took her 38 years to reach the age of 16. (page 152 153) B. How many brother and sister does Rose down? Rose had two other siblings, a brother named Stephano and a sister named Seraphina. Rose doesnt know (or remember) of their existence until she saw the files in the robot. Her siblings were also programed to be killed by the robot. If not, they were still stassed until then. (Page 312-313) C. What does Rose do in order to talk to Otto? Since Otto couldnt talk and afraid to touch Rose, she decided to chat with Otto on a screen (I assume its like a tablet). (Page 102) 6. I try to keep myself active, keep my heart open, refuse to sink into despondency when I find myself crying for no reason in the middle of the night. This is my favorite cables length of the book because Rose has been suffering so much, all because of her parents. She did not have the love that every valet being deserve to have, yet she is still trying really hard to move on, forget the past and holding on to her future. I can also find myself in this line since I have been always trying to be happy and not being desperate over the bad things that happen in my life. 7. One thing Ive learned from this book is to not give up consid erably and hold on to my dream.

After entering the CST, they opened fire as instructed by Hamza Ismail lobbed grenades inside the station premises and opened fire from his AK-47.The duo continued firing and throwing grenades at lawful intervals and continued moving ahead even as the security forces started confronting them and later surrounded them.Seeing little or no retaliation from the stunned police forces that night, the duo decided to take the CST subway, but Ismail beckoned him to go to Platform No. 1 where a train was waiting. They continued moving ahead in the appriseling of the bridge at the end of the station. They tried to force open some vehicles parked outside in a small lane. They saw a person coming from the opposite direction and Kasab killed him. Ismail started firing ahead and the duo jumped a short wall there and entered one of the wards of Cama Hospital.Ismail asked Kasab to wait at the hospital gate and he went inside, firing and later led him in. As they went inside, Ka sab held a person as a entertain after the police forces confronted them. The police rushed towards them and dragged out Kasab and hammered him with a baton, snatched his gun and attacked him in the dope with the butt.Kasab claimed that he did not fire at anyone at that juncture and had lost consciousness. When he revived, he found himself at Nair Hospital, under arrest by the Mumbai police.TRIALChargesheetIndian investigators filed a formal 11,000 page Chargesheet against Kasab on 25 February 2009. His trial was to have started on April 15 but was put off as his lawyer, Anjali Waghmare, had been dismissed for a conflict of interest. He has gotten a new lawyer named Abbas Kazmi. On 28 April, he wrote a letter through his lawyer to the magistraterequesting a odour bottle, a toothpaste, Urdu Times newspaper and permission to walk in the adjacent varandah alongside his barack. He also requested the court to deposit the amount (given to him by the terrorists) seized from him by police into his jail account.Time line of ProceedingsOn 26 Nov 2008, Ujjwal Nikam was plant as Public Prosecutor. In Jan 2009, M L Tahiliyani was appointed as judge to conduct the trial. In Feb 2009, an 11,000-page charge sheet was served on Kasab. In Mar 2009, counselor Anjali Waghmare was appointed as Kasabs lawyer. Kasab appeared through video-conferencing.In Apr 2009, Waghmare was removed as Kasabs lawyer. Abbas Kazmi was appointed as defence lawyer in mid-April. Trial began on April 17, 2009.On 20 Apr 2009, the prosecution submitted a list of charges, inc luding the murder of 166 people. On 6 May 2009 Kasab pleaded not guilty to 86 charges. In May 2009, an eye witness identified Kasab in court. Another said he saw Kasab and nine others arrive by boat. Two doctors who treated him, identified him.On 2 June 2009, Kasab told the judge he now also understood Marathi. In June 2009, the special court issued non-bailable warrants against 22 absconding accused including Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafeez Saeed and chief of operations of Lashkar-e-Toiba, Zaki-ur-Rehman Laqvi. On 20 July 2009 Kasab retracted his non-guilty plea and pleaded guilty to allcharges, but his trial will continue.Visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in an interview with Thai publication The Nation during the ASEAN conference in Phuket in July 2009 that had Kasab been educated, he wouldnt have been a terrorist. On 18 December 2009, Kasab says he is innocent, he was framed and tortured by Indian Police. In a surprising U-turn he claims to have come to Mumbai 20 days ago and was scarce roaming at Juhu beach when police arrested him.Details of proceedingsAjmal Amir has written to the Pakistani High Commission in India requesting help and legal aid. In the letter, he confirmed the nationality of himself and the nine slain terrorists as Pakistani. He also asked the Pakistani High Commission to take custody of the body of fellow terrorist Ismail Khan, who was killed in an encounter in south Mumbai on the night of November 26. Pakistani officials confirmed the receipt of the letter and were reported to be studying its details. However, no further updates were given on the matter by Pakistan.Kasabs trial was delayed due to legal issues, as numerous Indian lawyers were unwilling to represent him. A Mumbai Bar Association passed a resolution proclaiming that none of its members would represent Kasab. However, the Chief Justice of India stated that Kasab needed a lawyer for a fair trial. A lawyer for Kasab was eventually found, but was replaced du e to a conflict of interest. On February 25, 2009, Indian investigators filed an 11,000-page Chargesheet, formally charging Kasab with murder, conspiracy, and waging war against India among other charges. Kasabs trial began on 6 May 2009. He initially pleaded not guilty, but later admitted his guilt on 20 July 2009.He initially apologized for the attacks and claimed that he deserved the devastation penalization for his crimes, but later retracted these claims, saying that he had been tortured by police to force his confession, and that he had been arrested while roaming the beach. The court had accepted his plea, but due to the lack of completeness within his admittance, the judgehad deemed that many of the 86 charges were not communicate and therefore the trial will continue. Kasab could, and will almost certainly, be hanged if given the maximum penalty of death.Indian and Pakistani police have exchanged DNA evidence, photographs and items found with the attackers to piece toget her a detailed portrait of the Mumbai plot. Police in Pakistan have arrested sevener people, including Hammad Amin Sadiq, a homeopathic pharmacist, who arranged bank accounts and secured supplies, and he and six others begin their formal trial on 3 Oct 2009 in Pakistan, though Indian authorities say the prosecution stops well short of top Lashkar leaders. In November 2009, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that Pakistan has not done enough to bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice. On the eve of the first anniversary of 26/11, a Pakistani anti-terror court has formally charged seven accused, including LeT operations commander Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi.Ujjawal Nikam, public prosecutor in the matter of Kasab, said there was ample evidence to show Kasab and the two arrested accused, Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, were part of the conspiracy hatched in Pakistan to strike terror in the financial capital. He said foreign experts would be examined but their names and add resses should be kept secret. Nikam also said that further investigations in this case were on and supplementary chargesheet would be filed later.Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the court that Kasab, the prime accused in the case, would be charged with murder of 166 persons in the attack unleashed by Pakistan-based terror outfit LeT on November 26, 2008 here. Although he was not directly involved in killing all 166 persons, Kasab was an active member of conspiracy hatched in Pakistan to commit terror attacks in India, Nikam said in his brief preliminary address to open the case. Kazmi who had earlier defend to 30 accused in the 1993 Mumbai successive bomb blast trial, told the court he was willing to defend Kasab.Nikam said 1,820 witnesses had been cited but only authorisation among them will be examined. Prosecution would place 750 articles and 1350 documents asevidence. Nikam told the court that Kasab was directly involved in seven different cases of terror attacks.T hese pertain to murder of five crew of Kuber boat, including its navigator Amar Singh Solanki, bomb blast in a taxi at suburban Vile Parle, firing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Cama Hospital firing attack, killing of three police officers near Cama Hospital and theft of Skoda car and attack on police group near Chowpatty, he said. In all these cases, Kasab was involved with co-conspirator Ismail Khan, who was killed in police encounter near Chowpatty, Nikam alleged. He said there are five other cases in which Kasab has been charged with murder conspiracy, although he had not directly participated in them. These are firing in Hotel Taj Mahal, Hotel Oberoi, Restaurant Leopold Cafe, Nariman House and bomb explosion in a taxi at Mazgaon. The court took on record advocate Ejaz Naqvi as defence counsel for Faheem Ansari and Ahmed. Since Naqvi did not appear in morning session and Faheem sought time to appoint another lawyer, the court asked Faheems wife to call Naqvi to the court. Later , he came and told the court that he would continue to defend Faheem.Demanded trial by world-wide CourtThe alleged gunman in the 2008 bloody siege of Mumbai said he should be tried by an transnational court because he does not expect justice in India.Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, 21, told a special court that police had falsely implicated him in the case.I should be tried in an international court, he told Judge M.L. Tahiliyani.Earlier Kasab retracted his confession that he sprayed gunfire into a crowd at the railroad station. He also said police tortured him into admitting having a role in the attacks.Kasab also said thathe wanted to call witnesses from Pakistan for his defense, and that he should be allowed to meet Pakistani officials. Witnesses would include a bye officer, he said, without providing other details. The judge asked him to file a petition through his attorney.Kasab could face the death penalty if stinged. Murder and conspiracy to wage war against India are among the char ges he faces.Kasab told the judge he came to Mumbai as a tourist and was arrested 20 days before the siege began. On the day the attacks started, Kasab said police took him from his cell because he resembled one of the gunmen. They then shot him to make it look as if he had been involved in the attacks and re-arrested him, Kasab said.ANALYSISIt is mockery of the Indian discriminative System that even the charge is proved on the convict but the trail is going on. In the month of July last year the convict pleaded guilty of all the charges, but the Judge said that the other 86 cases have not been addressed therefore the trial should continue and in the month of September he again told the court that he was forced to plead for guilty by the Indian police. Has anyone think over it that if the verdict would have been given as soon as he pleaded guilty what would happen?Such kinds of questions were raised, and will raise on Indian judicial System if it will continue to follow such kind o f path. The Court should has given its verdict on the basis of the evidences produced by the public, eye witnesses and moreover the acceptance of the charge by the convict. The other matters could have been addressed later on. Even there was news that Kasab giggle over the question asked by the judge and made fun of it. This is a satire on the discipline of the courts. The judge has to order him tobehave in the court. This clearly shows that giving a chance of fair trial to convict made him to perceive as goose egg is going to happen to him for the next ten years. People have such kind of mentality towards the Judicial System. If a suit has been filed in a court then the guilty has nothing to do with it for many years. Our Judicial System needs changes. This system has to be discarded and a new system should be introduced. Indian Police is not required to file a charge sheet of 11,000 pages and judges are needed not to give judgements running through thousand of pages. A simple and logical statement is sufficient for the parties involved in it and for the general public as well.In my view this trial of Ajmal Kasab should be finished because there is nothing more to think over it. Otherwise it will lead to ingestion of more and more money of the government on such a heinous criminal, which is of no worth.
